3. THE NEEDLE AND THREAD
Its important to choose the right needle for the work you plan to do. Most needles have a flat side on the end opposite the point. This helpsmake sure the needle is mounted to the machine correctly. Be sure to follow your manual for exact instructions on mounting the needle. Never use a bent needle or a needle with a dull point. The "Special" needle listed below is a kind you can get specially for these fabrics and it helps avoid skipped stitches. The list below will give you a guide to picking the right size needle and thread.
Fabric(s) | Needle size | Thread / Size |
Organdy, Taffeta, Velvet, Fine lace | 11 | Cotton / 80-100 or Synthetic |
Cotton, Corduroy, Linen, Velveteen | 14 | Cotton / 60-80 or Synthetic |
Nylon tricot, Double knits, Power net | Special | Synthetic |
Note: Always use the same kind and size of thread in the bobbin you are using for the top thread. If you load a bobbin from the spool youll be using for the top thread youve got it. Sometimes though youll pick up a bobbin with thread on it and pick up a spool of thread and start getting ready to sew. Be sure to check that both threads are the same. To save a little trouble just keep your bobbins of a thread that are not in use with the spools they came from. Keeping the bobbin thread and spool thread of the same kind and size doesnt mean they have to be the same color. There are times when you will want to use different colors for the bobbin thread and the spool thread. This happens if the color of your top material is different from the color of your bottom material. For instance say you want to sew red lace onto a white petticoat. The white petticoat would be the bottom material so you may chose to use white thread in the bobbin so it will match the petti. The red lace would be the top material so you may choose to use red thread from the spool to match the lace.
